  1. The frequency at which a mechanical system
  2. will vibrate freely. A pendulum, for example,
  3. always oscillates at the same frequency when
  4. set in motion. This natural frequency depends
  5. upon the string's weight and tension. More
  6. complicated systems, such as bridges, also
  7. vibrate with a fixed natural frequency. If a
  8. varying force with a frequency equal to the
  9. natural frequency is applied to such an
  10. object the vibrations can become violent, a
  11. phenomenon known as resonance.
